Paving takeoff with asphalt tons by layer

CivilQuick Takeoff measures pavement areas from the plans, applies the pavement structure from the typical sections, and gives you tonnage for every asphalt layer, plus curb, sidewalk, medians and pavement markings.

From square yards to tons

Paving quantities start as areas on the plan: full depth pavement, overlay, milling, widening and patching. They're bid in tons of each mix. CivilQuick Takeoff measures each paved area from the vector linework, reads the pavement build-up from the typical sections, and calculates tons per layer. Paving rates (pounds per square yard per inch) and aggregate weights are yours to set, because local material and density vary.

Paving items it takes off

  • Asphalt by layerTons for each layer in the typical section
  • Mill & overlayMilling and overlay areas, counted separately
  • Full depth pavementNew and widening pavement areas
  • Aggregate baseBase and subbase, by your aggregate weights
  • Pavement demolitionCounted even where new pavement overlaps it
  • Curb & gutterLF by type
  • SidewalkSY, with curb ramps as area and count
  • MediansMedian area, with curb taken off separately where it is paid separately
  • Pavement markingsLF by width and color, broken lines by gross length

Overlaps counted the way they're paid

Paving plans stack items on the same footprint: demolition under full depth, milling under overlay. CivilQuick counts each pay item on its own, so overlapping areas are all in the takeoff instead of one hiding the other.

Click any paving quantity to see the outlined area on the sheet. Adjust a boundary, draw your own area, or move an area to a different pay item, and the tonnage updates.

Paving takeoff questions

How does CivilQuick calculate asphalt tonnage?

It multiplies each paved area by the layer thicknesses from the typical section and your paving rate in pounds per square yard per inch. The rates are editable for each mix.

Does it handle variable depth overlays?

It is learning to read variable overlay build-ups from the cross section sheets. Until then you can edit the pavement build-up for an area yourself.

Does it do concrete paving too?

Concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter, medians and curb ramps are taken off by area, length and count.
